Safe power distribution units from RPP

RPP is responding to an alert issued by The Department of Health Estates and Facilities Division warning against the dangers of using domestic extension leads in medical and other locations.

Concern is raised by the light construction of these types of product, which, when used in environments of constant use, can lead to loss of earth continuity, arcing, interference, fire and failure. The company has submitted a range of its PDU s (power distribution units) to satisfy requirements and provide a more robust and safe solution.

Made with extruded aluminium bodies and polycarbonate accessories, these PDUs are strong and lightweight, with different options available so that other devices can be incorporated to suit particular applications.

The clip together socket modules are said to provide greater reliability by reducing the amount of conventional type terminal connections and thereby reducing the risk of failure due to stray wires and loose screws. The socket contacts are made from phosphor bronze and do not rely on surrounding moulding material to maintain contact pressure on plug pins. Power supply flexes are manufactured in low smoke flex (LSF) in accordance with BS 6500, and the units are provided with an exterior earthing stud and lead as standard.

Section 6 of the Medical Electrical Installation Guidance Notes MEIGaN, as issued by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), concerns socket outlets as used in medical and other applications. It recommends that isolated power supply (IPS) sockets should be colour coded blue and engraved Medical Equipment Only. RPP offers both a single and twin socket outlet solution for this by incorporating separate easy clip socket modules within the outer face plate. This enables the clean earth supply to the socket modules to be maintained and to be separate from the dirty earth that is made via the earthing strap on the rear of the plate.
