With increasing pressures on healthcare services, it has become ‘routine’ that changes are made to bring about cost savings whilst still maintaining the quality of patient care.
Nigel Forbes, Managing partner at Litmus, a specialist catering and facilities management consultancy, discusses ‘the complex challenges NHS Trusts face’, the ‘importance of streamlining operations’, and ‘how efficiencies can help to futureproof the healthcare service’.
According to statistics, total health spending in England in 2017/2018 was around £125 billion, and is expected to rise to over £127 billion by 2020, taking inflation into account. The NHS is facing ever-increasing financial pressures, with many Trusts across the country reportedly exceeding their budgets. This health spending is largely dedicated to the NHS England budget, but it is also shared on other areas, including infrastructure and hospital builds.
The healthcare sector has long realised that an increasing number of people will rely on its services for longer than ever before. The pressure is real, and in order to cope and future-proof, there has been a bigger emphasis (more than ever) on NHS Trusts improving their efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This is where we come in, and it’s an area that can bring genuine savings, whilst still maintaining – and in many cases improving – the levels of care that patients receive.
