The need to maintain a high quality hotel-like environment while keeping decoration costs to a minimum has led to a major installation of wall protection systems, from contract interior specialists Gradus, at the new PFI Queen’s Hospital in Romford.
Gradus provided a complete project management service, working in close partnership with the architect, contractors and site management team to survey, supply and fit the wall protection. Due to the scale of the project, the products were installed in stages over a six-month period and are expected to provide a range of benefits. For example, the wall protection system prevents the décor from being stained, scuffed and damaged by passing trolleys, wheelchairs and pedestrian traffic. It also promotes a more hygienic environment, by preventing dents and scratches in surfaces, which can become breeding grounds for bacteria and hospital superbugs.
In addition to protection, the products provide support and guidance for patients and visitors, as well as corner identification to help aid access for all users and achieve an inclusive environment in line with Approved Document M and BS8300:2001. The £261 million build is the country’s largest PFI hospital and was delivered on time and on budget in just 39 months by Bovis Lend Lease, leading to the development winning the 2007 PFI/PPP Project of the Year Award at the Building Awards.
