Cardiac capacity boosted

University College of London Hospital Trust, reportedly one of the NHS’s largest and most complex Trusts, has installed an Axiom Artis dFC with Stereotaxis NIOBE Magnetic Navigation system in its Heart Hospital.

Supplier Siemens Medical Solutions says the installation of the full digital cath lab, which features dynamic flat detector technology, high-frequency X-ray generator and automatic parameter settings, enhances the hospital’s already strong cardiac capacity and improves its ability to treat arterial fibrillation. Providing “unprecedented” cardiovascular imaging performance, the Artis dFC offers a wide range of diagnostics, interventional and electrophysiology applications – the latter helps in the treatment of atrial fibrillation using radio frequency ablation around the pulmonary veins.

The system can be remotely operated, minimising radiation dose exposure to radiographer and electrophysiologist, while Siemens says the magnetic navigation system allows augmented procedure accuracy of ablation in a reduced time.

Fiona England, superintendent radiographer, University of London College Hospital, said: “It was essential to choose an easy to use system. Its revolutionary design uses magnets to simplify the way doctors steer the catheters through the heart and blood vessels. Our cardiologists can now carry out procedures with greater accuracy and confidence, enhancing our diagnostic and treatment capabilities.

Thanks to the increased speeds in electrophysiology procedures, the hospital’s workflow has improved.”
