Mobile theatre ‘increases productivity’ at Edith Cavell

One of Europe’s “most advanced” fleet of mobile operating theatres will be spending the next 18 months at Peterborough’s Edith Cavell Hospital.

Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust called in one of Vanguard Healthcare’s fleet of large modular mobile theatres to increase theatre capacity. It is initially being used for dermatology and general surgery patients to increase productivity and ensure patients needing elective surgery are treated on time.

Fiona Lennon, project clinician, said: “When looking for additional operating theatre capacity our first priority was to focus closely on the patient’s needs. It was important any interim solution achieve or exceed the trust’s operating theatre standards. Vanguard Healthcare’s mobile theatres are built to Department of Health standards and use the most up-to-date equipment. We have worked with Vanguard from initial planning right through to implementation, and will also have a Vanguard clinical staff member on site for the project’s duration.”

The Edith Cavell site is the subject of a £335 m PFI project which will see a new 612-bed acute hospital built; work is already well under way, opening is scheduled for 2010.
