Sheffield critical care unit completed

Sited at the city’s Northern General Hospital, the unit will provide improved facilities for patients, relatives and staff, addressing what Race Cottam says is a recognised need for enhanced facilities in the treatment of severely ill patients. The development will provide wards with a higher proportion of single rooms, where nursing staff can better handle complex medical conditions. A Therapy Services Unit, completed earlier this year, offers additional treatment spaces plus gym facilities, patient changing rooms and an open plan waiting area.

The architects have maximised window openings to allow natural light to penetrate the building and provide patients with interesting views from their hospital beds. Mark Barker, associate at Race Cottam, said: “I’m delighted to see the completion of a project designed with the needs of patients, visitors and staff at the forefront of our vision. The result is a unit that reflects current thinking in the healthcare sector and a development we hope will improve the quality of healthcare across the region.”

The project has been procured under the NHS ProCure21 principles of partnering, with HBG Construction the developers.
