Negative pressure’s positive solution

Distributor of emergency response, infection control and health and safety products to the Irish healthcare sector Patron Distributors will feature on its stand the “Demistifier” negative pressure system for the isolation and containment of infectious patients in hospitals.

According to Patron, which was established in 1987, negative pressure isolation is “the best defence hospitals have against the spread of airborne pathogens”. The Demistifier is said to ensure protection against pathogens including multi-drug resistant TB, MRSA, VRE, C. difficile, SARS, H5N1 Avian flu, smallpox, meningococcal meningitis, Varicella Zoster and bacterial spores.

On admission to an accident and emergency department a patient with a suspected infection is simply placed in the Demistifier on his or her hospital trolley, with the negative pressure environment reportedly preventing crosscontamination of staff. The individual can then be moved, in the Demistifier, to a side room or cubicle prior to hospital admission, eliminating the risk of crosscontamination of corridors.
