A Belfast health centre incorporating Technal architectural aluminium glazing systems has won its second architectural award.
Designed by Penoyre and Prasad LLP in partnership with Todd Architects, the scheme features striking use of Technal’s façade systems, including 100 windows in different colour combinations, frame and span sizes. Main contractor was Farrans Construction.
The scheme has remodelled a 1950s building to provide a large health centre and combine community and social services under one roof. It was commended for its “design, use of interior space, colour and public art”, and for “making a positive contribution to the social, civic and economic life of the area”.
Bob Welsh, general manager, Hydro Building Systems, which supplies the Technal brand, says: The colourful windows and curtain walling were central to the lively design theme. The systems achieved the architects’ requirements for aesthetics and large spans to allow a high level of light deep into each room.”
Two buildings are linked using Technal’s roof glazing to create an attractive atrium. Other prominent features include a “stained glass” three-storey façade constructed from curtain walling above the main entrance, dual colour tilt/turn casement windows in a variety of colours, and multi-coloured infill panels inserted into window frames, creating an “animated” appearance.
