Clear indication of intent

Staff on the burns unit at Whiston Hospital, part of St Helens and Knowsley NHS Trust, which “pioneered” the use of cleaning hand gel for ward visitors 11 years ago, have taken their infection prevention strategy a further step forward by using Vernaclean’s new Indicator tape to audit their cleaning procedures.

The tape can be applied to all types of hospital equipment to prove it is clean. Vernacare says it “assures patients and clinicians of good hygiene standards and provides visible evidence of best practice”.

Ward manager Sister Donnas Wilkinson (pictured) said: “Our commodes are cleaned thoroughly after every use, and the person who has disinfected the equipment then writes their name and the time of the clean on the tape and attaches it to the commode.”

The Indicator tape has been trialled in other parts of the hospital, proving effective in helping control any instances of infection.
