NHS Property Services (NHSPS) has announced the appointment of leading ethical and sustainable construction expert Dr Shamir Ghumra (pictured) to its Executive Board as director of Responsible Business.

He joins from the Building Research Establishment (BRE), where he was head of Building Performance Services. Well connected to both industry and academia, he was responsible for a range of business areas at BRE, including energy modelling, BREEAM, and the BRE Academy – a leading training provider for individuals and businesses for the built environment.

NHSPS explains that he is ‘a leading expert on sustainability challenges in the built environment’, has an Engineering Doctorate from Loughborough University, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment, and a Chartered Environmentalist. He is also Visiting Professor of ESG Performance and Strategy at Loughborough University, and a board member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment.

His executive portfolio at NHSPS will include Corporate Social Responsibility and Energy & Environment, and he will also oversee the organisation’s responsible business offer and social and governance framework. He said: “I am very excited to be joining NHS Property Services at a time when the organisation is starting to realise its potential as a responsible business. This is a turning point for so many businesses in the construction and facilities management industries, and I hope that by bringing my experience to NHSPS we can deliver a sustainable NHS estate that is future-proofed for generations of patients.”

Alongside his other roles, Dr Ghumra is a former board member and co-founder of the Supply Chain Sustainability School, and former chair of the Construction Industry Coalition on Modern Slavery. He plays an active role in monitoring and improving industry standards, and is involved with both European and International work.
