Dolphin addresses disinfection dilemma

DDC Dolphin plans next month to launch a “two-stage, no-hand touch” combined pulp bedpan macerator and bedpan support washer-disinfector designed to help eliminate healthcareacquired infections both at initial bedpan disposal and via subsequent hand cross-contamination.

The standard “partly HTM 01-01- compliant” system combines, within a single unit, the new DDC Dolphin Pulpmatic pulp bedpan macerator and a DDC Dolphin Optima plastic bedpan support washer-disinfector, both featuring hands-free automatic lid opening, closing and support. For maximum effectiveness, the unit must be positioned close to a wash station featuring a similar “no hand touch” on-demand system to control water flow and automatically dispense handwash solution.

The company says: “Users can safely dispose of the waste and the pulp bedpan liner in the macerator with no risk of contamination before placing the re-useable plastic support in the washer-disinfector, which will thermally disinfect and cleanse it. They should then thoroughly wash their hands at the handwash station before returning to ward duties.”

Automatic disinfectant injection within the macerator chamber leaves it smelling fresh after each cycle, while customers opting for both the “standard” top-loading Optima and the “premium” front-loading Panamatic XL2 washer-disinfector (in place of the Optima) will also benefit from automatic de-scaling. The XL2’s selfemptying capability also makes it fully HTM 01-01-compliant. DDC Dolphin believes its two-stage solution, currently before the Department of Health’s Rapid Review Panel, is “the only one to comply with both the letter and the spirit of HTM 01-01”.
