Free help with new DECs

CIBSE (the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers) has launched a campaign offering organisations with large, publicly accessed buildings free guidance to help cut the cost of the new Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) and Display Energy Certificates (DECs) in return for a commitment to pledge 100 staff hours to energyreducing activities.

CIBSE information director Jacqueline Balian (pictured) explained at a launch event at London’s City Hall on 15 August that signatories to the Institution’s 2008 “100 Hours of Carbon Clean Up” initiative (visit www.100hours.co.uk and see article on p23-27 of this issue) would, in return, receive a package of guidance in electronic form on how to prepare for EPCs and DECs. She said: “Once they sign up we will provide them with their own personalised ‘log on’ data and password to access the information.

Learning activities, themed events and eco-freebies will help keep participants motivated.”

New EU-driven legislation will make it mandatory from October 1 for owners of large commercial buildings to produce DECs that rate their buildings’ energy performance for public display.
