Chilled beams first to meet European standard

Waterloo Air Products believes its chilled beam systems, offering high efficiency, low energy consumption and reduced running and maintenance costs, all “at a reasonable cost”, look set to win increasing share from “conventional” fan coil systems in UK healthcare applications.

The company says its active chilled beams are the UK’s first to meet the new European standard (PR) EN 15116 on chilled beam testing following extensive evaluation by BRSIA labs. Sales director UK and France Carl Gipson concedes that UK fan coil system sales currently “dwarf” those of chilled beam systems, but argues that the latter’s “extremely high energy efficiency” and low maintenance requirements will “rapidly see them gain popularity in the cost-conscious healthcare arena”.

He explained: “Our active and passive chilled beam systems are all designed for high energy efficiency with, for instance, a 4:1 air induction ratio. They are quiet, have no moving parts, are compact, quick and easy to install, and offer 2 to 4-way throw.”

“Easy to integrate into all ceiling systems”, the range includes surfacemounted units that can incorporate luminaires, sprinkler and public address systems, room sensors and cable trays. Active beams are available as a standard with a 300 mm wide rectangular profile, but can be extended to accommodate any ceiling width. The range also includes a 600 x 600 mm square tile replacement beam.

A number of modules can be fitted together to maintain aesthetic consistency, while hinged fronts simplify access for maintenance and cleaning.
