A more ‘hygienic and sustainable’ alternative to ‘traditional’ hospital curtains

Lisclare says Silentia Screens provide ‘a more hygienic, sustainable, and cost-effective alternative’ to traditional hospital curtains.

The company said: “Curtains have long been a proven source of pathogens which become rapidly contaminated. More research is needed to establish the effectiveness of antimicrobial coatings, and the possible unwanted consequences in relation to AMR and the environment. The use and management of disposable curtains negatively impact the environment and is disruptive to patient flow. Curtains are high-frequency touch points, but cleaning or changing them every day isn’t practical or cost effective. This is possibly the reason the issue is avoided within the 2021 National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness, leaving Infection Control leads with inadequate guidance on how to deal with the important risk posed by curtains. Practical, easy-to-clean alternatives such as wall-mounted folding screens are available and used in other countries such as Sweden and Denmark (as well as in an increasing number of hospitals in the UK). These alternatives have a lower carbon footprint and are less disruptive to patient flow. Is it time for the NHS to reassess its longstanding relationship with curtains?

With easy-to-clean surfaces, Lisclare  says its Silentia privacy screens help reduce the spread of infection, while prioritising patient privacy. It said: “Our screen system is modular, and designed to deliver many years of service, enabling you to repurpose, reuse, and reduce your hospital’s carbon footprint. We have a wide range of products and installation options to suit patient privacy needs. Silentia Screens offer a long-term and cost-effective solution to patient privacy.  They can be easily and frequently cleaned, in situ, and without disruption to patient care, thereby reducing the risk of cross-contamination.”

By eliminating waste generated by disposable curtains and energy-consuming laundry of washables, Lisclare says Silentia Screens are both more cost-effective and sustainable than curtains.

The company added: “Silentia Screens are designed to be easily repaired, and require virtually no maintenance. With a minimum 10-year technical lifetime, they can be repurposed throughout the hospital as needs change, ensuring you get the most from your investment.

We want to work with you every step of the way to deliver the best products and tailored advice. We can demonstrate the value that Silentia screens can bring to your environment, and how usefully they can be incorporated into your specific routine. Our EasyClick, EasyReturn,  and EasyClean functions make our products user-friendly, sustainable, easy to clean and easy to set up.”
