Tilbury Douglas completes Aintree hospital ED extension

Tilbury Douglas has successfully completed the £20.5 m extension of the Emergency Department and theatre suite at Aintree University Hospital for Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The new two-storey extension, with hybrid operating theatres, features improved assessment areas, an enhanced Radiology Department, and improvements to ambulance drop-off bays on the ground floor. The new dedicated Stroke Emergency Assessment Unit ensures that patients are swiftly clinically assessed using a CT scanner, so treatments are administered as soon as possible to ensure the optimum recovery outcome.

Phil Shaw, Divisional director for the North West at Tilbury Douglas, said: “It is a great achievement from all those involved to be able to hand over the completed project to Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The new facilities will enable health professionals to deliver the care that patients deserve in a space fit for purpose with an enhanced layout. This will allow them to manoeuvre more quickly, driving clinical efficiencies and enhanced patient care for the local community.”

With a focus on social value, the project team worked with 93% local companies, which were all SMEs. With a social value return on investment of 78%, the team spent more than 210 hours of their time volunteering, which included transforming an inaccessible and underused courtyard into a respite garden to help alleviate stress among hospital staff, patients, and visitors. In addition, the project delivered more than 200 apprentice weeks while on site.
