Tower Hamlets health centre awarded BREEAM Fit Out 2014 ‘Excellent’ Rating

Wood Wharf Health Centre, a 'state-of-the-art facility' in Wood Wharf, Tower Hamlets, London, has been awarded a BREEAM Fit Out 2014 ‘Excellent’ rating, making it just the UK’s second healthcare fit-out project to achieve this prestigious certification.

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is a globally recognised method for certifying the sustainability of buildings. BREEAM UK Refurbishment and Fit-out 2014 is a specific version of BREEAM designed to assess and certify the environmental performance of refurbishment and fit-out projects. The BREEAM 2014 scheme assesses various aspects of a building’s environmental performance, including energy efficiency, water usage, waste management, materials, pollution, and ecology.

The Wood Wharf Health Centre is the result of a collaboration between NHS Property Services (NHSPS), the NHS North East London Integrated Care Board, the Borough of Tower Hamlets, and the Canary Wharf Group. A new branch of the existing Island Medical Centre, it provides many services to registered patients, including GP accessibility, physiotherapy, and pharmacy. The centre incorporates 15 clinical rooms, self-service healthcare pods, and a digital infrastructure for virtual consultations.

Martin Meltzer, Senior Capital manager for NHS Property Services (NHSPS), said: “We are thrilled that Wood Wharf Health Centre has received this certificate. It is only the second healthcare fit-out project in the UK to achieve a BREEAM Fit Out 2014 Excellent rating. This recognition will inspire us to continue our efforts towards creating greener, efficient and more resilient assets for the future.”
