Tallest tower set for refurb

Guy’s & St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust has confirmed the appointment of Arup, in partnership with London-based architects Penoyre and Prasad, to undertake a feasibility study for the external refurbishment of the 34-storey Guy’s Tower at Guy’s Hospital in south London.

The team will provide a technical and management role and will address issues associated with the tower’s structure, façade, windows and energy use – with the aim of “revitalising the building using innovative solutions that are energy-efficient and environmentally responsible”.

Completed in the 1970s, Guy’s Tower was considered one of the most innovative hospital designs of its time and is still, the Foundation Trust believes, the world’s tallest hospital, at 143 metres high.

Marc Ralph, from Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “The Tower is a prominent landmark on the London skyline and this project presents an opportunity to make a statement of excellence, not only to patients and staff at the Trust, but equally to London as a whole.”
