Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust (AWP) have unveiled a vibrant new mural at the Long Fox Unit's Dune Ward, designed to bring therapeutic benefit to service users living with Dementia.
Created by the ward's art psychotherapist, Tom Holdsworth, who has worked on Dune Ward for over seven years, the mural is the latest in a series of art installations across the unit, which is based in Weston Super-Mare and run by AWP.
Drawing inspiration from vintage Art Deco travel posters and natural landscapes, the artwork blend's themes of nature and escapism - two motifs that frequently emerge in the creative work of service users, and is intended to promote warmth and tranquillity.
Tom Holdsworth, art psychotherapist said: “Visual surroundings have a direct impact on how we feel. My hope is that colourful, peaceful imagery can help our service users feel more comfortable and safer in their environment.”
The mural, installed in the ward's conservatory, was designed not only for its aesthetic appeal but also for its therapeutic potential. Research and clinical experience suggest that natural imagery can reduce agitation, aggression and distress - common challenges for individuals with a Dementia diagnosis.
The installation also incorporates existing features of the space, such as lighting and radiators, to enhance the overall effect. One light fitting even serves as a symbolic sun, casting a warm glow across the mural and the room.
Staff and service users have already responded positively to the new addition, noting its calming presence and uplifting atmosphere.
