One of the UK’s first new “super hospitals”, currently under construction by Balfour Beatty Construction for University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust, is said to be unique in that hundreds of staff and a number of patient representatives have not only helped design it, but have also selected its medical products.
Set to admit its first patients in June 2010, the new £545 million Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham will combine the services and facilities currently offered by two of the city’s best-known existing hospitals, the Selly Oak and Queen Elizabeth, and is set to be “one and a half times bigger than the new Birmingham Bull Ring”. Among the products hand-picked by patients and staff are 564 Brandon Medical Coolview C50 examination lights, installed in hundreds of examination rooms. With over 40 years’ medical lighting experience, Brandon says its lighting products were “the clear choice”. The new hospital is expected to “set the pace for national and international progress for research into cancer and its relationship between genetics, gene therapy, and other viruses”.
