Managing waste – now and in the future

The complex task of managing waste produced by healthcare facilities will be spotlighted at a London conference supported by IHEEM being jointly staged by the Healthcare Waste and Resources Research (HCWRR) Group (a multi-stakeholder research body into healthcare waste based at Northampton University) and the Chartered Institution of Waste Management (CIWM) in London on 24 and 25 September.

Taking place at the Royal College of Physicians, Regent’s Park, the “International Symposium on Healthcare Waste Management” will have as its keynote speaker Raki Zghondi, urban health and environment advisor at the World Health Organisation, who will discuss healthcare waste management in the Eastern Mediterranean region – “the challenges and prospects”. Other topics discussed, under the broader areas of biohazards, pharmaceutical waste, waste minimisation and finance, will include “auditing healthcare waste – regulation and policies” (Bob McIntyre, national technical advisor, hazardous waste, the Environment Agency); “a hospital waste manager’s experience of Environment Agency audits” (Jen Goode, environment manager, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust); “hazardous healthcare waste management – the good, the bad and the ugly” (Penny Walter, principal waste management consultant and dangerous goods safety advisor, Issafe); “The carbon agenda and the NHS” (Lorraine Holme, sustainable development programme manager, Department of Health); “planning for biohazards and pandemic outbreaks” (Dr Allan Woodward, New York State Department for Environmental Conservation); “Future needs for alternative treatment technologies” (Dr Anne Woolridge, researcher, HCWRR Group), and “Perspectives on healthcare waste management in Sierra Leone” (Maria Mahon, waste manager, Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust). During the second day delegates will have the choice of attending the conference or visiting two sites.
