HLM Architects’ design, in association with Hall Black Douglas, for the new South Wing at Altnagelvin Area Hospital in Londonderry, was highly commended for the International Healthcare Project Award under 40,000 m2 at the recent Design & Health International Academy Awards in Singapore.
The 17,000 m2, £33 million South Wing, built for the Western Health and Social Care Trust, was officially opened by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in May, with key services including maternity and neo-natal, oncology, elderly care wards, rehabilitation, and hydrotherapy. Low rise buildings have been built around landscaped courtyards and provide 10 new south-facing wards with views to the Sperrin Hills and surrounding open landscape. Altnagelvin Hospital has 474 inpatient and 54 day case beds.
