Paul Kingsmore, director of Health Facilities Scotland (HFS), and IHEEM’s president-elect, will open the 2009 Scottish Healthcare Conference, which opens on 12 November at the Crieff Hydro Hotel in Perthshire.
This year’s theme at the two-day IHEEM-supported event is “Developing a sustainable care environment”. The first keynote presentation on the opening day will be delivered by Dr Kevin Woods, director-general health, and chief executive, NHS Scotland. Also presenting a keynote will be Blair Sadler, a former CEO of the Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego (HEJ – August 2009) and senior fellow at America’s Institute for Healthcare Improvement. Other speakers on day one will include Health Facilities Scotland project director Bill Martin, discussing the first year of Frameworks Scotland; Craig Carr, a consultant to The Royal Marsden Hospital Foundation Trust, considering the lessons learned from the January 2008 fire at the London hospital; Professor Bryan Griffiths of NHS Innovations, examining the latest innovations in fighting healthcareacquired infection; and Dr John Barrett, senior research associate and programme leader of the Future Sustainability Team at the University of York’s Stockholm Environment Institute, who will talk on “carbon footprinting”. The conference’s first day will close with an exhibition visit and reception followed by a formal dinner, with the afterdinner speaker being Jim Leishman MBE, a former professional footballer, who is currently director of football for Scottish Division One side Dunfermline Athletic and increasingly in demand as a TV and radio pundit. Day two will include a keynote presentation by Maf Smith, director of the Sustainable Development Commission (Scotland), while subsequent presentations will include an address by Bev Hall and Helen Parr of the Hillingdon Hospital NHS Trust on the Hillingdon Single Rooms Study; Paul Kinsgmore, examining the “Estates Monitoring Tool – What it means for you”; Eddie McLaughlan, assistant director, Health Facilities Scotland, discussing “Decontamination – the strategic direction”, and Arup’s Phil Nedin, who will talk on “Designing for flexibility in the acute healthcare sector”.
