Allies and Morrison and Devereux Architects and the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust have launched a “masterplan for the future”, setting out how the city’s famous Addenbrooke’s Hospital will form the heart of the new Cambridge Biomedical Campus, an international centre for patient care, biomedical research and education.
The project partners say this is the next stage of the expansion of the hospital site – part of the 2020 Vision, announced in 1999. The campus – home to Addenbrooke’s, the Rosie women’s and maternity hospital, and partners – will cover 140 acres rather than the current 70 (photo shows the current campus), providing room for extensive new clinical facilities including the Children’s Hospital, expanded services for maternity, neurosciences, and cancer, and the relocated Papworth Hospital. Also incorporating research labs such as the new Medical Research Council Laboratory of Molecular Biology, the campus will be one of the largest, most internationallycompetitive concentrations of healthrelated talent and enterprise in Europe. Paul Appleton, from Allies and Morrison, said: “The site will have a population equivalent to a small town, so we’ve planned a structure that will help people find their way around while reducing travel and energy requirements.”
