Luton & Dunstable NHS Foundation Trust has engaged Medical Air Technology to add a further 130 m2 operating theatre to increase the Luton and Dunstable Hospital’s capacity to undertake orthopaedic surgery.
The project had to be undertaken while guaranteeing that staff and patients were not adversely affected by the works. MAT, the main contractor and the facility’s designer, demolished and re-built an area on the fifth floor immediately adjacent to, and on the end of, the existing suite of operating theatres, to create a new independently ventilated orthopaedic theatre incorporating an MAT Ultraflow 2.8 x 2.8 m laminar flow unit. Access was restricted as the existing theatre complex had to remain fully operational, requiring sealing off of the site and installation of an external lift which provided site entry through a fifth floor window opening and the rooftop plant area.
