Fabric reduces infection spread

Fabric pioneer Panaz has been selected by the Royal Bournemouth & Christchurch Hospital to help in its campaign against hospital-acquired infections. The company is supplying 20,000 metres of antibacterial Shield fabric for new cubicle and window curtains within the hospital. Included under the £215,000 contract is a commission to customise an existing Panaz design to incorporate the "RBCH" initials, thereby emphasising the hospital's unique identity.

Shield is one of the latest innovations developed by the dedicated Panaz Intelligent Textiles Division and incorporates "Aegis", a permanently active antimicrobial agent designed to eliminate the propagation of bacteria such as E.coli and MRSA. Once in place, Shield draperies also have a filtering effect on the surrounding environment, reducing the spread of airborne contamination. Aegis is a durable and wash-resistant finish which is bonded to the basecloth, becoming a permanent part of the fabric and remaining fully active throughout its lifetime. Shield will withstand repeated laundering to sterile standards, and draperies may even be steam cleaned insitu without any adverse effect on their antibacterial and flame retardant properties, avoiding the high maintenance costs associated with curtain removal, storage and re-hanging.
