A Welsh Health Board has contributed input during refinements to Vernacare’s new porter’s chair (HEJ – February 2010). Developed to be easy to clean and comfortable, the chair incorporates a footrest that rises automatically when the patient is safely seated, requiring no hand contact.
Its tough metal frame is protected by a smooth, durable plastic body comprising three moulded plastic parts that will withstand chlorine-based cleaning and come apart easily for deep cleaning. Full prototypes are expected to be ready for further evaluation this month. Part of the advisory group helping Vernacare perfect the design is The Betsi Cadwalider University Health Board. Christine Jeffrey, clinical nurse specialist, infection prevention and control (pictured) said: “The multidisciplinary team that evaluated the prototype provided the varied perspectives of our colleagues in portering and health and safety, infection prevention and control.” The feedback has influenced changes including repositioning of the footrest, and modifications to the leg extenders, IV attachment, note holder, and rear wheel drive.
