Construction of a “world-class” cystic fibrosis (CF) unit for young patients has recently commenced at Sheffield’s Northern General Hospital.
The 12-room unit, to feature “hotel-style” rooms themed on “everything from a New York loft to an Oriental garden” (see artist’s impression), has been designed by healthcare architects Race Cottam Associates, and will be the only one of its kind in South Yorkshire and North Trent. CF patients need hospital treatment for up to a fortnight at a time, several times a year. Each en suite single room will feature the latest entertainment technology, such as computers with internet connection, and Nintendo Wiis. Race Cottam said the new unit would be “at the cutting edge of healthcare provision”, enabling integrated teams of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, and dieticians, to come together to optimally treat young CF sufferers. The architect’s design team has worked closely with ProCure21 principal supply chain partners BAM Construction and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. The latter is providing the space and meeting 60% of the capital costs, with the remaining £1 million being met through the Sheffield Cystic Fibrosis Appeal.
