A new link bridge, designed by HLM Architects for NHS Kensington and Chelsea as part of the £15 million redevelopment of the East Pavilion at the St Charles’ Centre for Health and Wellbeing, a Grade II-listed former Victorian hospital in West London, has been completed.
Built by Interserve Project Services via ProCure21, the bridge is an essential part of the redevelopment, helping to expand use of the upper storeys, and enabling previously empty areas to be put to good use, including for a new renal dialysis unit, GP facilities, diagnostics, outpatient services, and urgent care. The bridge is supported with four circular steel columns spaced evenly in pairs on each side, echoing the existing cast iron bridges, which bear on the existing brick walls to the existing ground floor link. The elevations and roof are clad with a proprietary double-glazed structural glazing system, hung off the new structural frame. Additional support is provided by glass fins, connected to the main steel structure, to maintain the transparent nature.
