Cost-effective roofing membrane

A roof at Reading’s Royal Berkshire Hospital is finally free of scaffolding thanks to a 3M roofing solution. The flat roof covering the hospital’s radiology department had been leaking, but the Royal Berkshire NHS Foundation Trust had not had the budget to replace it.

Scaffolding had been erected to support a temporary roof until the required funds could be found. Mike Cottam, strategic account manager, 3M Construction Markets, explained: “The hospital’s facilities manager had received quotes to replace the old roof, but these were very expensive. We suggested repairing it using 3M Scotchkote Premier Plus Flat liquid roof membrane, at around half the cost.” The roof membrane can be applied without special training via brush or roller, and bonds with the substrate to form a seamless waterproof coating. Derek Hart, the Trust’s consultant building services engineer, said: “This job was complicated by the amount of plant in situ, making use of a solid membrane unviable due to the amount of cutting that would have been required.”
