A Spanish architectural and engineering firm, JG Consultants, with extensive experience in hospital projects, and which is affiliated to IFHE national member organisation the Asociacion Espanola de Ingenieria Hospitalaria (AEIH), is to lend its expertise to a project involving construction of a new maternity hospital in sub-Saharan Africa at Addis Ababa in Ethiopia.
Its involvement follows the sending of a letter to IFHE President Francisco Castella by Barcelona-based NGO Matres Mundi (Mothers of the world), a body which aims to improve the health of mothers and children in the world’s poorest countries. In the letter Matres Mundi President Dr Josep María Carrera requested technical collaboration and assistance. JG Consultants is one of a number of organisations that will provide financial, personnel-related, and technological support. The new maternity hospital, which will offer services including obstetrics, paediatrics, gynaecology, internal medicine, and nutrition services, will provide mother and child care, and “health worker education”, for a wide geographical area. The 10,000 m2 hospital will feature 150 inpatient beds in 80 rooms; outpatient, emergency, surgical, diagnostic, nutritional, general services, teaching, and residential facilities.
