Colchester challenge

Yorkon recently craned into position at Colchester General Hospital the final modules, all built off site, of a new paediatrics department, elective care centre, and surgical ward, as part of a £20 m ProCure21 project – the largest development in the hospital’s recent history.

The off-site solution reportedly reduced the programme time by around six months, and allowed an existing ward building to remain operational until just days before the first modules arrived. The Tangram Architects-designed three-storey building will provide an elective care centre, 68 inpatient beds, consultation and treatment rooms, nurses’ stations, two isolation beds, administrative offices, a school room, children’s dining room, utility room, stores, toilets, and ancillary rooms. Delivered and installed in 17 days were 148 steel-framed modules, each weighing up to 12 tonnes. The units were partially fitted out off site.
