BSI (the British Standards Institution) has published a new standard /code of practice for facility designers, owners, and operators to ensure that design takes account of the expected performance of the facility in use.
BS 8536’s development was sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation, and Skills. A new addition to an existing set of standards, it is intended for use by those preparing or contributing to the preparation of a design brief, including owners refurbishing an existing facility, organisations procuring a new one, and designers. Stan Mitchell, chair of the technical committee behind the standard, said: “BS 8536’s value is significant. The real value that a true facilities management approach offers is the contribution at design stage, whether this be new build or refurbishment. Input here will influence the asset’s operational costs and efficiency of use – now recognised as representing 80% of the whole life cost. Add the potential to directly influence the carbon footprint, sustainability, working environment, and flexibility in use, and the value at such early stages can be invaluable.”
