Engineering consultancy Henderson Green, which specialises in renewable technologies, has designed services including heat recovery ventilation, industrial laboratory gases, and laboratory and office variable refrigerant flow comfort cooling, for a £6.3 million extension to the Southampton Centre for Biomedical Research at Southampton General Hospital.
The six-story extension, sandwiched between two existing buildings, features a striking “rainbow-coloured” façade incorporating Trespa panels. The environmental consultancy also designed the building’s daylight-linked lighting, above ground sanitation system, new LV vertical power distribution, and LED emergency lighting. The new 2, 800 m2 facility undertakes nutrition and respiratory research, and is an extension to the Wellcome Trust’s Clinical Research Facility. It was built between the existing West Ward Block and Lab & Path buildings within the hospital’s Level B main loading bay. This necessitated the building of a temporary loading bay to ensure continuity of deliveries during construction. The scheme has achieved a BREEAM Healthcare “Excellent” rating.
