Benefiting from biomass

The Pilgrim Hospital in Boston, Lincolnshire is benefiting from the completion of what United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust says is one of the UK’s largest, most successful biomass heating projects (HEJ –September 2010) yet.

The Trust describes the fitting of a new Binder 3MW steam boiler within a new hospital Energy Centre as “an ideal template for how the NHS can apply biomass heating to significantly reduce both carbon emissions and heating costs”. Design, installation, and ongoing operation have been delivered by Cofely and Wood Energy. The project has reduced boiler house and total site emissions by 51% (including imported electricity), while annual financial savings of around £210,000 are expected. Wood Energy has now launched a new Green Heat Module offering (see photo), designed to maximise the benefits available via the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI). The Module can be procured as an energy service contract (heat sold on a p/kWh basis), lease, or direct purchase.
