Flexibility and careful planning were key to the successful cleaning of the ventilation system for 10 operating theatres in a “major Northern English NHS Trust” hospital, says duct cleaning specialist, Ductbusters.
Theatre closures had to be minimised, while affording engineers full access to enable a total clean and bacteriological test of the ventilation plant and ductwork. Ductbusters adjusted its hours of work to fit in with amended hospital schedules. The team began work at 5.00 am so as to complete work in the theatres’ clean corridors before hospital staff arrived. Work was finished by 2.00 pm to allow the theatres to be readied for their bacteriological tests. The project took 10 weeks, with only one theatre closed at any one time, and no operations cancelled. Each theatre to be cleaned was closed on Thursday morning and reopened on the following Monday morning.
