Heat exchanger systems save money

Two Spirax Sarco EasiHeat packaged steam-to-hot-water solutions are providing heating and hot water at Eastbourne District General Hospital’s new Endoscopy Unit – on the first floor of a £5.7 million hospital extension.

Plant for the building housing the Endoscopy Unit needed to operate in line with the NHS’s target of an 80% reduction in CO2 equivalent emissions by 2050 (from a 1990 baseline). Since (Spirax Sarco says) decentralised gas-fired hot water boilers would not have met the requirements, two EasiHeats were specified, to harness plant steam from the existing boiler house.

“EasiHeat is a ready-to-install solution which utilises steam in a compact plate- and-frame heat exchanger to provide instantaneous hot water,” Spirax Sarco explained. “The modular design will enable the hospital to more cost-effectively meet its future expansion requirements, with two units installed, instead of the four originally thought to be needed.

“The plate heat exchanger design will allow it to simply add more plates into the frame to expand capacity as demand rises.”
