Checklist for FSO glazing compliance

The introduction of the Regulatory Reform (Fire) Order (FSO) is claimed to be the most significant change to fire safety in the past 30 years. The new FSO covers all public buildings as well as the common areas of multiple occupancy housing.

One of the main changes in the new legislation is that the burden of ensuring that suitable fire precautions are in place is transferred from the fire authority to the person or persons responsible for the building and its occupants, generally the owner or employer. There is also a responsibility on any contractors carrying out works or repairs that may materially affect fire safety.

Penalties for not adhering to the new FSO range from fines to imprisonment. Glass manufacturer Pilkington has produced a checklist to ensure that a building’s glazing complies with the FSO regulations.

System thinking is critical, Pilkington says. A fire-resistant glazing system can only function as intended if it is installed as part of an approved system where all components are compatible. These include the glass, glazing seal, beads, frame material, design and fixings.
