Neo-natal unit keeps its cool

Limerick’s Mid-Western Regional Hospital has turned to a chilled ceiling solution from SAS International to help combat heat generated from special equipment used in its intensive care neo-natal department.

Specified for installation during a refurbishment of the facility, the radiant chilled ceiling panels use water as a cooling medium, radiating cooling energy downwards, which also means there is no perceptible air movement or noise to contend with. This was a critical comfort factor within a department that cares for critically ill newborn babies.

SAS says the noise of conventional air conditioning systems using mechanical cooling technology made such equipment unsuitable for this installation, while the hospital was also concerned about the “aggressive effects” of the synthetic refrigerants used in some such systems. Chilled ceilings can also offer significant reductions in whole life lifecycle costs due to their reduced maintenance requirements, and are energy-efficient, SAS maintains.

In this installation hinge-down panels allow access to services; SAS International’s Irish project management team worked closely with Limerick Hospital’s maintenance department to coordinate fitting of the chilled ceiling and its integration with light fittings and mechanical pipework.
