According to System Sensor, reportedly the world’s largest manufacturer of fire detectors, Greater Manchester fire crews spent over 97,000 hours in 2006 alone dealing with 13,500 false alarms from automatic fire alarms.
With the fire service already working closely with facility managers to improve procedures when alarms are triggered, System Sensor is developing technology designed to stop false alarm generation in the first place. The company describes its latest detector, the Coptir, as “the most stable fire detector on the market”; it will reportedly both prevent false alarms being initiated and provide ultra-sensitive detection of the many different fire threats in any building.
In exhaustive testing under both laboratory and simulated real-life conditions, the multi-sector, multicriteria detector outperformed all alternative detection technologies in 21 different false alarm tests and 29 fire alarms tests, says the firm.
