Regional contractor, Speller Metcalfe, has started work on the new £5 m Shifnal and Priorslee Medical Practice in Shropshire, which will house a number of healthcare specialists, and provide ‘state-of-the-art’ medical care, doctors’ offices, and a dentist.
The new practice will form part of Teldoc, an overarching ‘supersurgery’ incorporating medical centres across Telford. Dr Rashpal Bhachu, Teldoc’s Vice-Chairman and Director of Operations, said: “With our passion and vision to provide quality and innovative primary care services, we are excited to see the plans for this medical centre come to fruition.”
Thirteen consultant, office, and treatment rooms are included in the plan, with a multi-disciplinary team set to staff the centre. Located off Haughton Road, the facility will address Shifnal’s rapidly expanding population, and is being constructed to meet the local community’s needs – particularly in terms of extended opening hours, and increasing the range of integrated services and number of appointments available.
The project is also giving special consideration to the native wildlife through the introduction of hedgehog holes, bird and bat boxes, and other habitat-related measures, which sit alongside further sustainability measures on site – including PV roof panels so the centre can use solar energy to offset gas and electricity use, and buried drainage tanks to ensure groundwater does not flood the area in heavy rain.
Fifty-eight car parking spaces will be created to cater for the 15,000 patients the medical practice is anticipated to serve, with additional overhead spaces for future growth.
The building has been designed by Bundred and Goode Architects on behalf of Aequitas Shifnal Limited. NHS Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin Clinical Commissioning Group has supported construction of the building, which is set to open in late 2023.
