As increasing hygiene standards within all healthcare environments are implemented the need for regular attention to ventilation systems has become more critical, argues Ductbusters, which offered expert advice on their stand at the Healthcare Estates show last week.
Ghasson Shabba, Facilities Management Msc course leader at Birmingham City University, concludes that MRSA and other bacteria can be transmitted through dirty ventilation systems, only increasing the importance of frequent maintenance.
Areas such as theatres, CCSD, ITU & SCBU, along with any other sterile areas, would probably, Ductbusters argues, benefit from an annual clean and sterilisation to comply with the latest HTM. “Bacterial levels on the surfaces of supply ductwork need to be under 10 cfu to qualify as fit for purpose”.
Other less critical areas could be subjected to an annual risk assessment to ascertain the internal conditions for comparison with the dust levels laid down in the HVCA TR19 Guide To Good Practice, which gives a cleaning threshold of 60 microns for supply and 180 microns for extract.
With many years’ experience in all types of healthcare premises, Ductbusters can advise on any of processes. It operates strictly to the following criteria:
· trade accreditation (HVCA Member).
· fully conversant With HTM 03-1.
· flexible work patterns.
· directly employed workforce.
Ductbusters offers free site surveys to assess accurately the amount of work required on any ventilation system. To arrange a survey or request further information telephone: 0800 085 0403 or visit www.ductbusters.co.uk.
