Modular approach makes it child’s play

One of Europe’s biggest and busiest paediatric hospitals, Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children’s Hospital, has chosen recycled and refurbished modular buildings for three new facilities.

The three contracts, worth over £1.5 million, have each been completed on time and on budget by Foremans Relocatable Building Systems, reportedly the UK’s largest pre-owned modular building supplier. Working closely with main contractor G&J Seddon, Foremans has provided an office building for the hospital’s surgical division. The modular approach enabled the development to be sited on a steel gantry above a traditionally-built administration block, so that the Trust could expand the office accommodation despite site constraints. Foremans’ latest project is a threestorey, 24-module multi-purpose building, which provides a new main entrance for the busiest outpatients department, public facilities, a clinical area, and administrative offices. In just four months from receipt of order, Foremans also completed a two-storey facility for the project team managing a £175 million redevelopment of the hospital.
