‘Self-funding’ water softening

Environmental Water Systems (EWS) claims that its “fully automated” HVD technology, which “efficiently softens water to remove calcium and magnesium salts that cause scum and limescale within process and drinking water systems”, offers typical payback in under 18 months via savings in operational costs when used to replace “outdated co-current systems”.

The company explained: “Water softening is achieved by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions attached to ion exchange resins, a batch process known as ‘base exchange softening’. This has two operation modes: in ‘service mode’ the feedwater passes through the resin with calcium and magnesium swapped for sodium, while in ‘regeneration’ mode a salt solution is pumped through the resin, removing the calcium and magnesium.” The company added: “With an HVD system, salt usage, rinse water consumption, and the consequent wastewater volumes, are all reduced. The more efficient ‘regeneration mode’ reduces energy consumption and minimises environmental impact because less waste is produced, less salt is used, and less energy is required.”
