Tackling back injuries at work

Slingsby has launched a product to help reduce healthcare sector back injuries, claiming research reveals that one in four nurses are suffering from musculoskeletal injuries.

Its specially adapted Work Positioner can be used “to take the strain off nurses, and improve efficiency in a wide range of day to-day processes, from assisting with epidurals, to handling waste plaster-of-Paris”. The “small and manoeuvrable” Work Positioner is designed to be easy-to-use, adaptable, and to allow lifting of objects from ground level to head height. Christian Slingsby, sales director, explains: “Many healthcare staff risk back injuries due to their work’s nature, which sees them dealing with increasing numbers of bariatric patients, constantly moving equipment, and regularly having to adopt and hold awkward positions. “The idea for the adapted Work Positioner originally came from nurses who historically had to support patients’ weight when administering epidurals. It is also proving popular with those using hemofiltration machines programmed to fill a 5 kg bag every hour – the most a nurse can lift. However, with the Work Positioner the bag can be filled much further, meaning nurses no longer have to change them 24 times a day.” Other uses include transporting and lifting heavy objects, moving fluid packs, and accessing high shelves.
