Cancer centre achieves financial close

Shepherd Construction has started work on Hull & East Yorkshire Hospital NHS Trust’s £45 million oncology and haematology centre – the Castle Hill Cancer Centre – in East Yorkshire.

The three-storey, 19,500 m2 centre, which has been designed by HLM Architects, will provide outpatient care, a day hospital, 116 beds in four wards, six linear accelerators as well as pathology, pharmacy and medical physics facilities. It will cater for Humberside and north Lincolnshire.

The scheme sits on the north face of a sloping site and its design prevents the new centre from being intrusive, respects views of surrounding villages and protects the radiotherapy bunkers by cutting the new centre into the hillside. The materials used include brick, render, timber, a stone coloured block and tiling, which combine to minimise the feeling of a large hospital building and protect the impression of a more domestic surrounding.

The building in its entirety maximises views of the landscape through the use of glazing. Sustainability and environmental impact have informed the design of the scheme. The inpatient wards are naturally ventilated and the overall scheme will deliver a 20% improvement in energy efficiency over and above current building regulations.
